Right out of High School David enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. His desire was to show himself and others that he had what it takes to be a Marine. He finds himself in Iraq, facing the Platoon Leader who is from the same home town, with some of the same friends. The connection grows stronger on returning to the world after their first tour in Iraq and going on leave back home together, from that point on both worlds are changed forever. Neither believes a future exists, focusing instead on returning to Iraq for a second tour and most likely being killed.

This novel is very strange in that it seems more like the uncouth diary of a real veteran than a work of fiction.
One could assume this to be good but it is not, at least not always.

First, editing is outright bad. Typos, grammar mistakes, awful syntax are constantly in the way of enjoyment as are some inconsistencies.
Second there is no real sense of time passing. David is 18 at the beginning and more than 26 at the end but there are no clear landmarks to help us see him growing up. Or simply that time was passing that fast.
Third style is constantly shifting. In bootcamp David's words feels clockwork, he tells things like a child would. This sort of writing permeates the whole of the novel but it changes every time he makes love with his first boyfriend -who by the way is dismissed rather abruptly from the story and never mentioned again- or with Jason.
A neater, more interesting style is also achieved during some battle scenes.

On the other hand our author seems to have done his research as many details of miltary life are depicted quite convincingly.
The characterization of the two lovers is also well done, they are likeable and their love is heartwarming. Side characters are nondescript extras with hardly any personality.

This work will please patriots as a true sense of belonging to a country exudes from it.
As a cynical European I smiled in condescension at some patriotic outburst but I am sure others may appreciate them.

All in all a second, a revised edition could improve an already interesting book.

Harms Way edition by Holloway Hudson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I really enjoyed reading this story. I tend to have a soft spot for stories involving soldiers finding each other and this one was great. (I didn't give it 5 stars because there were long passages I glossed over because I'm not a military person and wasn't keen on the duller aspects, but that's just me. I don't think the author should leave it out, though.)
It was touching and just enough erotic thrills to make it a great read.
I'm glad it ended the way it did, it can make this pessimist hope. )
